Flitter, Flutter...another Butterfly

Not the best photos...but we had another butterfly emerge this morning. Two to go. The chrysalis went very black and you could see the orange wings through it. Amazing. We took it down to the Nature Garden and it flew up into the cabbage tree. Then we came back to class to complete a soduku puzzle about the four stages of the life cycle.

Metamorphasis

There has been great exitement in Room 7 today...we have our first butterfly. It emerged from its chrysalis this morning to much shreeking and yelling. I am very surprised that it didn't promptly hop back inside it's chrysalis!! It has now gone home to Poppy's garden to flutter around and lay some eggs...starting the whole life cycle once again. Truely magical.

Caterpillar and Tadpole Update

We have two caterpillars fixing themselves to the stem of the milkweed plant and about to turn into a chrysalis. Very exciting. The children are fascinated. The tadpoles have settled into Room 7 and seem to be doing well...no back legs yet :-)

Our Chysalis

We have a couple of chysalis and two caterpillars chomping through their milkweed plant. Many thanks to Mrs Lee who donated two swan plants and Lara's mum for continuing to provide us with more leaves. We are loving observing their changes.

Tadpoles

Thank you Mrs White (Callum's mum) for getting us five tadpoles and setting up the aquarium for us. The children are so excited about being able to watch the life cycle of the frog. The children are loving our current topic about creatures great and small...we are so captivated by these little creatures I am not sure we will even get to look at the great big ones.

Reading in the Native Garden

We sneaked down to the Native Garden this afternoon to read The Enchanted Wood by Enid Blyton. The children are captivated by this story. It was the perfect place to read and when we were very quiet we could even hear the trees going wisha, wisha, wisha. It is bringing a touch of magic to an otherwise busy, full on term :-)

Caterpillars and Butterflies

We have some resident caterpillars in Room 7 who are munching through their milkweed. I am only hoping they don't change into a crysalis over Labour weekend and the children miss the magical change. After our trip to Butterfly Creek and our inquiry into the Life cycle of the butterfly...we are experts of knowledge at each stage of the cycle. The children have been creating a booklet. We are all loving this topic.
